A hair transplant takes most of a day. For those hours, you are in one place, being worked on — and how that time is spent has a real effect on both your experience and the quality of the work. It is a detail patients rarely think to ask about, and it is worth understanding.

At GraftLab, the procedure is done with you seated comfortably and awake, under local anaesthesia. You can rest, talk, use your phone, eat, and take breaks through the day. You are numb where it matters, but otherwise yourself.

Why we keep patients seated and awake

At GraftLab we have chosen to keep the patient seated and awake throughout, under local anaesthesia, rather than lying face-down for hours. Sitting upright over a long day is more comfortable on the neck and back, makes breathing easier, and lets you rest, talk, eat, and take breaks. It removes the need for sedation simply to get through an uncomfortable position.

Sedation is not without consequence. It carries its own risks, requires more monitoring, means you cannot simply get up and stretch or leave when you wish, and means you need someone to take you home and look after you afterward. For a procedure that is not, in itself, painful once the scalp is numb, we would rather not introduce it.

Why sitting up serves the result, not just comfort

Comfort is reason enough — a hair transplant should be a dignified experience, not an ordeal to be endured. But the seated, awake approach also serves the result. A comfortable, relaxed patient who can take breaks is easier to work on steadily and carefully over a long day than one who is rigid, uncomfortable, or sedated. Careful work depends on an unhurried, settled environment, and that is easier to maintain when the patient is at ease.

It is, in the end, a small thing that says something larger about how a clinic thinks. A procedure designed around the patient's comfort and dignity tends to be a procedure designed with care in general. When you consider any clinic, it is worth asking simply: how will I spend the day?
